      • Non-preferred terminology
        • Image of God is a term that has great acceptance within Christianity, but also tends to be ignored or glossed over. For that reason, it's often good to pair it with, or emphasize one of the other expressions.
        • Imago Dei is a term that's more relevant in academic contexts.
        • Theosis is a known and accepted term within some theological contexts (Eastern Orthodoxy, some Catholicism, educated theologians of various traditions). Outside of these contexts, it's better to use one of the other terms.
      • "Likeness of God" is introduced in Genesis 1, as part of the Creation Mandate.
      • "Likeness of God" always includes both ethical and physical transformation. These should usually be mentioned together.

          • Jesus calls his followers to imitate God (Matthew 5:43-48).
          • We are called to imitate Christ.

          • The resurrection of the dead

      • "Likeness of God" always has an ethical context. In Genesis 1, it reflects the loving work of the creator who blesses and takes joy in creation. In the New Testament, it has the context of imitation of Christ.
      • "Likeness of Christ" is often a good alternative expression to emphasize. Christ shows us the ethical path to being like God. For some Christians, it may sound more intuitive to talk about imitation of Christ. At the same time, we should never separate these. Imitation of Christ is imitation of God. Christ reveals the truth of what God is like, so that God can be imitated.
    • "Participating in the work of God" is an ideal term for Participatory Theology
      • We are called to participate in the work of Christ
      • We are called to participate in the work of God
    • Renewal of All Things is an ideal term for Renewal Eschatology
      • Jesus talks about the renewal of all things (Matthew 19:28-30)
      • Peter proclaims the restoration of all things (Acts 3:21)
      • The Lord's Prayer: Jesus teaches us to pray “your kingdom come…on earth as it is in heaven”
      • Romans 8:18-21 talks about all creation eagerly anticipating joining in the freedom and the glory of the children of God
    • "Working towards" is often more appropriate and accurate than "building" or "creating", when talking about the future. However, in some cases it is better to use the stronger terms.
    • We are not saved by works. We are saved by faith in order that we may do the good works which God prepared for us to do (Ephesians 2:8-10). This distinction is important to maintain.
