Critical Rationalism
Critical Rationalism is the epistemology associated with philosopher Karl Popper, and recently with physicist David Deutsch. It explains how knowledge grows, and why science works as well as it does. The basic premise is that knowledge grows through conjecture and critique, rather than through induction. For this reason, scientific theories are designed to be tested and falsified, rather than demonstrated or proven. The basic process:
How Knowledge Grows
Conjecture
We propose explanations of how the world works.
Critique
We test them hard, and let the weak ones fall.
Correction
Better explanations survive; understanding grows.
Openness
Nothing is ever proven beyond all question.
